A Commitment to Education in Traditional Medicine

Fresh off our recent feature on the Foundation’s latest education bursary program recipient Jessica Heupel at The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), we wanted to follow up with a look at Maryam Yavari, the CCNM bursary recipient from the 2018/2019 academic year. This year, Maryam will receive her Doctor of Naturopathy degree from CCNM. Maryam is a shining example of how the Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation seeks to improve the health and wellness of Canadians by identifying and fostering the talents of our nation’s rising stars.

Her educational path to naturopathy was a storied one. Over 14 years ago, Maryam was a part of a Research Scholar program at the world-renowned Duke University Medical Center, a facility that has pioneered studies for global health and wellness concerns for many decades and counting. As you may know, Duke is also home to an elite Division I basketball program and since Maryam’s year at the University they have won two NCAA Championships. We’re not saying the events are correlated, but you never know!

Maryam went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) at one of the world’s oldest universities, the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) in Iran, an institution specializing in medical sciences, clinical science, and health services. She also served as a physician and assistant professor during her tenure at IUMS. Maryam continued in her thirst for education, she then received her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Traditional Medicine from the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Backed with an education that most could only dream of, you would think that Maryam would dive right into her career, but she saw that her true path went beyond the concepts of traditional medicine. Maryam enrolled in the International Medical Graduate program at CCNM to pursue her interest in naturopathic medicine. The rest, is history. Or is it?

Today, Maryam works in various disciplines to help make our world a better, more sustainable, and healthier place, including integrative medicine, personalized medicine, systems medicine, and naturopathy.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support of the Plant a Seed & See What Grows Foundation bursary. I am grateful for the opportunities this bursary will provide me. It will not only help reduce my financial burdens to continue pursuing my education, but also will encourage me to continue planting medicinal herbs and to study more in this field. Your generosity makes a difference” (Maryam Yavari, April 30, 2019)
